PostSubject: Figurative Language    Fri Feb 28, 2014 8:43 pm

Want to make your writing more interesting? Why not add some figurative language into your posts, stories, and writing? ^o^

Here are 5 basic speech devices you can use to make your writing more interesting! I’m sure most of these are familiar, yet some may be new to you. Either way, refresh your memory of these devices and use them to help improve!

1. Simile: comparing 2 unlike things using like or as.

  • We didn't eat breakfast that morning, so I was as hungry as a bear when it was finally time for lunch.

2. Metaphor: Compares 2 unlike things without using like or as.

  • School was a prison at Greenvalley middleschool, since everyday the children were forced to sit in a classroom and listen to the long, drawn-out lessons.

3. Allusion: A reference to someone or something that is known from history, literature, sports, science, or some other branch of culture.

  • The science class was told that they would be breeding pea plants just like Mendel, one of the founders of genetics, to help understand the importance of alleles.

4. Hyperbole: A figure of speech that uses incredible exaggeration

  • When Zack walked up to Amy, she was so embarrassed she thought she might die in that moment.

5. Personification: giving animals or inanimate objects human-like qualities.

  • After the fight, Jamie didn't realize that her last chances to ever be happy again were walking out the door.
